Sibu Chapter Chairman Preview 2008
Another year had passed. We had bid farewell to the year 2008 and ushered in the New Year 2009.
The year 2008 had been a very eventful year for the MRC Sibu Chapter and indeed for everyone. For MRC Sibu Chapter, 2008 marked the 45th anniversary of our existence. After many years, our Headquarters building underwent a renovation with construction of a new storeroom and a major facelift of the building. Thanks to many generous donors and hardworking members' efforts! We had had a very meaningful and successful 45th Anniversary Celebration which was graced by the presence of Malaysian Red Crescent National Chairman and Secretary General, many local and state dignitaries and leaders. In the celebration we had shared valuable memories with our guests and honoured our Society's leaders for their contribution and self-sacrifices.
At the local and global scene, 2008 had been a year full of man-made and natural disasters. Locally, we had had more than our usual share flood and extreme climate changes, which brought about a great deal of damages to houses and properties. On the global scene, there were major disasters such as earthquakes and floods affecting Burma, Indonesia, China and so many other countries. In response to all these disasters, Sibu MRC had done our best to give disaster-relief to local communities wherever possible, and also collected donations to help the international disasters through relevant international relief agencies. All those of our members who had contributed money, time and effort toward this humanitarian work are to be highly commended, and we thank and praise them deeply.
In the face of all these unfortunate happenings, it makes one more convinced that the principle of Red Crescent or Red Cross is never more relevant today in the world and in our community. It should make us more resolute to inculate into our younger generation the value of humanitarian efforts to help the less fortunate members of our Society.
I thank all my colleagues in the executive committee, all working members, VADs, youth and link members for their co-operation, hard work and self sacrifice, I also thank all the blood donors and generous donors whose contribution enabled us to function well and smoothly.
Finally, I wish each and everyone a belated Happy New Year. May the New Year see the world weather the current economic recession that is affecting all nations, and bring us greater peace, harmony and speedy recovery.
